Living Now

Hope in Sight won the Silver award in the Social Activism/Charity category of the 2013 Living Now Book Awards, which recognizes the year’s best books for better living.

See the world through the eyes of author and ophthalmologist Aisha Simjee, MD. Through her unique riches-to-rags-to-riches-to-outreach story, she embodies one of the great American success stories of our time. Sharing her experiences at home and abroad, Dr. Simjee turns tragedies to triumphs, undeterred by seemingly insurmountable barriers. Based on her diaries, memories, friends, and photographs from the past seven decades, Hope in Sight follows her remarkable odyssey and quest to restore hope and dignity to sight-deprived and disadvantaged people, wherever they are found.

“No matter where you go, your gender, age, religion, race, and physical appearance will be taken into consideration. You will have to work harder than others to be equal.”

Aisha Simjee never forgot the advice offered her by Dr. U Ba Than, the dean of her medical school in Burma, as she left for America. Arriving in the United States with her luggage lost and only a $10 voucher, this petite young woman from a Muslim family, and weighing in at just eighty-four pounds, steeled herself to work harder than her classmates and colleagues and work through whatever prejudices she encountered.

Today a renowned ophthalmologist and humanitarian, Dr. Simjee has written Hope in Sight not only to bring focus to global health challenges but also to serve as encouragement to all of us to live more productive and meaningful lives.
